چکیده

Prescriber 5 February 2015 z 23 prescriber.co.uk Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterised by reversible airflow obstruction.1 Over five million people in the UK suffer with asthma and the healthcare burden of the disease is significant.2 Asthma guidelines encourage a ‘step-up’ approach in pharmacological treatment to achieve disease control and a ‘step-down’ strategy when asthma is under control.1,3 In this strategy, inhaled drug therapy remains the foundation in managing patients with asthma. This review highlights the range of inhaler devices used for asthma, their advantages and disadvantages and the importance of inhaler technique. The advantages and disadvantages of the common inhaler devices are shown in Table 1 and online videos of inhaler use are also available.3

ENHANCED HISTAMINE H I RECEPTOR BLOCKADE WITH CHLORPHENIRAMINE IN THE ASTHMATIC TRACHEO-BRONCHIAL TREE: FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR INCREASED DRUG DELIVERY IN ASTHMA

We have measured the competitive antagonistic effect of chlorpheniramine in bronchi of 8 normal and 12 asthmatic subjects. Classical pharmacological theory states that the degree of competitive antagonism depends only upon 1) antagonist concentration at the receptor, and 2) receptor affinity. Delivery and affinity also influence agonist responsiveness, but measurement of bronchial antagoni...

Spirometry Findings Following Treatment with Oral and Inhalant Corticosteroids in Mild to Moderate Asthma Exacerbation in Children

Introduction:  Asthma exacerbation is common in children. Treatment with oral corticosteroids (OCS) and inhaled corticosteroids are suggested for asthma exacerbation. It is shown that inhaled corticosteroids has similar outcome in reducing asthma symptoms compared to OCS. But few studies have evaluated the pulmonary function changes in these two treatments. In this study, we evaluated the chang...

American Academy of Pediatrics. Section on Allergy and Immunology. Management of asthma.

Advances in the knowledge of clinical pharmacology and pulmonary physiology have significantly improved the management of asthma in children and adolescents. Acute episodes of asthma can be treated with oral bronchodilators if the episodes are mild, but inhaled sympathomimetic drugs are more effective and may have fewer side effects. Effective therapy for status asthmaticus consists of intraven...
